TOTAL-VARIATION-NOISE is an edition of 100 unique tote bags created for Artis that reflect our noisy and arbitrary world. The visuals present a series of randomized outputs from a Max/MSP visual noise generator (patch: Rachid Moro). Following the rules the artist defines, the pixel size and jittering patterns are ever-changing, and outputs are released every few seconds. The work takes its cue and measures from the static commonly seen in VHS cassettes and analog TVs. This static, also called “visual snow,” refers to a visual field that appears in hallucinations while in a state of dazzle, often experienced with closed eyes.
