Barking Dogs Don't Bite, a short film/video work, comprises two parts—day and night, depicting the same vacant space activated by a chain of staged, semi-automated events. Filmed from opposite points of view, the space, a commercial art gallery, enters a cyclical process that seems self-inflicted. First, an iron gate slowly opens. A few seconds go by when a sudden burst of white smoke falls in the room, filling up the screen, cueing a long and noisy alarm sound, triggering activation of water sprinkles, and fighting off the white smoke until vision and air are clear again. The iron gate closes again. Passersby seem indifferent to the drama, and the viewer remains the sole witness to this performance of mechanical self-defense.
